The Faculty of Civil Engineering (CEF) has a long tradition dating back to 1945. It was one of the first four faculties of the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST), established in September 1945 by the University authorities. Firstly, it was called the Faculty of Construction and was composed of two Departments: Architecture and Civil Engineering. The current name was given in 1990 by the WUST Senate, at the request of the Faculty Council justified by the actual scope of scientific research and teaching. The scopes of autonomy, competence, and responsibilities of the Faculty are currently defined by the Law on Higher Education and Science and the Statute of the WUST. According to the Statute, the Faculty is the basic organizational unit of WUST and has academic rights that allow it to conduct scientific research and train scientific personnel, as well as conduct educational activities at the university level. The Faculty cherishes the values and traditions of the university, develops cooperation with other Polish and foreign research and educational units, as well as actively participates in building an information society and knowledge-based economy, cooperating with the institutional and economic environment. The mission of the Faculty is to set the direction of development and contribute to the development of engineering sciences in the discipline of civil engineering, geodesy, and transportation, to determine the directions of application of research results in the business environment, development of creative, critical and tolerant personalities of students, comprehensive development of scientific staff and active participation in the implementation of strategic initiatives of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The Faculty Development Plan reflects the University's target model, defined in terms of values grouped under the slogans of excellence, collaboration, and openness, and is in line with the University's goals and strategic initiatives of the University in five key strategic areas: education, research and innovation, cooperation with the environment, community, and infrastructure.
The Faculty educates students in three fields of study with a general academic profile:
It also provides training for graduate students in postgraduate studies and further training courses and educates doctoral students in cooperation with the WUST Doctoral School. On the other hand, the high quality of education is evidenced by a distinctive rating from the Polish Accreditation Commission (PAKA) awarded in 2011 and 2016, the certificate of European accreditation awarded by the Accreditation Commission for Universities of Technology (KAUT), and the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE) for 2019/20 - 2022/23, and first place in the country in the following 9 editions (from 2015 to 2023) of the "Perspektywy" Ranking of Study Directions in the group of majors of Civil Engineering.
The scientific research carried out by the Faculty's employees is basic and applied, concerned with the development of theory and practice in areas related to the broadly understood structure industry, including areas of knowledge important for the prospective development of the structure, innovative technologies in civil engineering, and practical applications.
The research and teaching staff of the Faculty totals about 130 people, among whom there are (data as of August 30, 2023):
The staff of the CEF predominantly shapes the scientific quality of the discipline of civil engineering, geodesy, and transportation in the field of engineering sciences, at WUST, as only about 3% of the discipline's personnel are from outside the Faculty. The discipline of civil engineering, geodesy, and transport at WUST has the academic rights for doctoral and habilitation degrees, and as a result of the Polish national evaluation process in the years 2017-2021, it received the scientific category A.
In terms of the number of scientific staff, the thematic range of research, and also the laboratory base, the Faculty ranks among the largest civil engineering faculties in Poland. The Faculty conducts extensive research and development activities for the industry, offers consulting and advisory services in the areas of basic and applied research, as well as specialized scientific supervision in the field of design work and implementation of construction projects. The Faculty's employees carry out high-value research projects assigned by industrial partners ranked among the largest in the country, such as KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A., Zarząd Portów Morskich Szczecin i Świnoujście S.A., Węglokoks S.A. or Stalexport Autostrady S.A.
The CEF cares about developing cooperation with the external environment, being aware that it is essential for maintaining competitiveness in the educational market and increasing the role of the Faculty in the national and international scientific space, as well as providing the opportunity to implement innovative solutions in practice. The Faculty pays particular attention to the formation of good relations with industrial partners, public administration units, associations, and professional self-government, as well as institutions related to civil engineering - in particular, building inspectorates, labor inspectorates, road authorities, etc., at the local, regional and national levels.
The Civil Engineering Faculty is the largest civil engineering faculty in the region and one of the largest in Poland. The Faculty community consists of about 2,300 people forming an internally diverse group, which includes: academic teachers (165 people), administrative and engineering-technical support staff (45 people), doctoral students (45 people), full-time, part-time and postgraduate students (2,040 people), and scholarship recipients of the international STRAINS program. In a broader sense, the community Faculty also includes retired employees and alumni of dozens of years of study.
The Faculty's community is its most valuable asset, which provides development opportunities and allows it to compete in the education and research market. In human capital management, The Faculty cultivates a long-standing tradition of applying good academic manners and building a faculty community with respect for the diversity of its members and their individual needs and aspirations. The University's adopted strategy, is the values are respected fundamental values such as human dignity, democracy, rule of law, social inclusion, concern for the environment for the benefit of future generations, and academic freedom.
The main location of the CEF is building C-7 located on the main campus of the WUST. The building hosts administrative offices, the Faculty’s secretariat and the Dean's office, staff rooms of the 3 departments, and most of the rooms available to the Faculty, including 2 computer labs. The building is adjacent to a large laboratory hall with rooms for engineering and technical staff and teaching rooms for laboratory classes. In addition, the Department still occupies 3 buildings - fully building H-3 partially building D-2, and building L-1.
The Faculty's research infrastructure is organized in the form of laboratories operating within the structures of individual departments. Laboratories, for the most part, are not formally separate organizational cells of the departments, except for the three largest, which are:
The research laboratories operating in the departments are equipped with advanced research apparatus. Examples of such apparatus include, for example: a mobile set for monitoring vibrations of structures, a stand for testing elements of engineering structures on a natural scale, climate chambers, a set for digital image correlation (DIC), a set for non-destructive testing of building structures including an ultrasonic tomograph and an integrated set for nondestructive diagnosis of concrete, equipment for the study of geometric morphology and mechanical microstructures of heterogeneous materials (compact and large-scale computer microtomograph, nanoindenter and ultra-nanoindenter), equipment for testing thermal properties of materials using the LFA laser technique, and others.
In addition to the above-mentioned laboratories, the Faculty has a unique apparatus at its disposal - Laboratory for Nano- and Microstructure Research of Composite Materials and Structures Engineering Structures, located in the GEO-3EM Research Center of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The latest venture is the interdisciplinary Laboratory of Experimental Engineering LET's GO Oculographic Engineering, which is currently under construction in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Fundamental Technological Problems, thanks to funds received from the budget of the Polytechnica Nova competition (announced in 2022 at the WUST).
The Faculty’s research apparatus is made available to PhD students. It is also used by undergraduate students carrying out their diploma theses and students in the course of teaching, under the supervision of specialized employees. The apparatus and research space at the disposal of a particular department is available to employees of other departments, as needed and available.
