Unit: Faculty of Civil Engineering » Department of Geotechnology, Hydro Technology, and Underground and Hydro Engineering

joanna Pieczyńska-Kozłowska

Assistant Professor at the Department of Geotechnical, Hydraulic, Underground and Water Engineering.

She graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. She received her PhD in technical sciences in civil engineering in 2013, defending with honours her dissertation entitled "Random finite element method analysis in strip foundation bearing capacity problems".

Her research interests include developing and implementing probabilistic methods for geotechnical engineering with particular emphasis on modelling soils with spatially variable characteristics. She is a member of a research team focusing on reliability analysis and risk assessment of soil-structure interactions. She is currently solving a problem related to soil modelling based on the estimated variation of strength parameters with depth. The first part of the project deals with transforming CPT sounding signals to obtain strength parameters. The second - is the computational side of the bearing capacity of shallow foundations under drained and undrained soil conditions.

In 2016 she was on a foreign internship at the Università degli Studi "G. d'Annunzio", in Chieti Pescara, Italy, resulting in a close scientific collaboration with Prof. Giovanna Vessia.

She has been teaching for over 10 years. Her primary teaching area is geomechanics and soil structures, i.e. Soil Mechanics, Foundation and Foundation - Selected Issues. She also teaches a course in Linear Algebra with Analytic Geometry on part-time undergraduate courses. Since 2019 she has been involved in the Advanced Solid Mechanics course and the STRAINS teaching project implemented with a grant funded by the European Commission under the Erasum Mundus Joint Master Degree programme. The project actively cooperates with 6 research and teaching centres in Europe, including the University of Lille and École centrale de Lille, France; the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium; the National Technical University of Athens, Greece; and the University of Calabria, Italy. At the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, she is the Coordinator of this project.

She has repeatedly been awarded her organizational activities for the University by JM Rector of PWr (2013, 2016, 2017, 2021). For the term 2021 - 2024, the Dean of the Faculty of BLiW appointed the Dean's Representative for the Faculty Promotion.

Since 2011 she has been associated with the editorial board of Studia Geotechnica et Mechanika, where she serves as Secretary.

This year, the Polish Committee of Geotechnics was recommended as a national representative in the Technical Committee TC205 Safety and Serviceability Committee.

Moreover, she coordinated the organizing team of the international conference MACHINE LEARNING & RISK ASSESSMENT IN GEOENGINEERING - MLRA2021, which took place in October 2021 at the Wrocław University of Technology as a hybrid.
